ExxonMobil and Chevron, the largest American energy companies, said on Friday that their earnings in the first quarter fell from a year earlier, pulled down by lower refining margins and plunging natural gas prices. But the oil and gas business remains highly profitable for the two giants even at a time of moderate oil prices. ExxonMobil said that earnings were $8.2 billion in the quarter, compared with $11.4 billion in the same period a year earlier. Their earnings were also hurt by falling prices for natural gas, a key fuel that is used in heating and industry. Natural gas prices, which soared after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, have fallen sharply as markets adjusted.

Illegal and ghost guns on display at the Attorney General Letitia James offices in Manhattan on March 15, 2023. The justices by a 5-4 vote had previously intervened to keep the regulation in effect during the legal fight. Ghost guns, which lack serial numbers, have been turning up at crime scenes with increasing regularity. The requirement applies regardless of how the firearm was made, meaning it includes ghost guns made from individual parts or kits or by 3D printers. The Supreme Court allowed the regulation to remain in effect while the lawsuit continues.

If you work for Reed Hastings, you'd better be ready to express your dissatisfaction. Good leaders seek out critical feedback whenever possible, the Netflix co-founder and chairman recently told entrepreneur Tim Ferriss' podcast, "The Tim Ferriss Show." "Because it's difficult, emotionally, in most companies to disagree with your manager, we call it farming for dissent," he added. "We have managers do things like [ask]: 'What are three things you would do differently if you were in my job?'" The strategies that didn't work served as learning opportunities, he added.

When it comes to taking risks, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has an important rule of thumb. "I try to take a lot of risks on things that are recoverable," Hastings said in a recent conversation on entrepreneur Tim Ferriss' podcast. A two-way door risk is easy to take because it's reversible, so "you can come back in and pick another door," Bezos said. But a one-way door risk probably can't be undone. In 2017, Hastings told CNBC he was actually pushing his content team to "take more risk" in that regard.

But, as they try to claim that mantle, many of those same forces in media and politics are behind a disturbing wave of book bans sweeping the nation. PEN America, a non-profit organization committed to protecting free expression, published an alarming report Tuesday indicating that the “book ban crisis” is only getting worse. “There were over 4,000 instances of book bans in the first half of this school year—more than all of last school year as a whole. In doing so, they have also disproportionately targeted books by women and nonbinary authors,” PEN America said. Ted Shaffrey/APSuch brazen book bans — unprecedented in modern American history — is at its worst in the red states of Florida and Texas.

CNN —Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the “Rust” film armorer who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month for the 2021 on-set fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is scheduled to be sentenced Monday morning in a New Mexico courtroom. Bowles maintains his 26-year-old client has been scapegoated for the safety failures of film set management and other crew members. Prosecutors also cited jail calls in which Gutierrez Reed allegedly complained “about the negative affects this incident has had on her life” and called jurors derogatory names. “She had six, six live rounds on that movie set, the earliest date that I can track them for you is October 10, (2021),” the prosecutor said. “(Gutierrez Reed) could not anticipate what Baldwin would do.

Oil markets shrugged off the growing tensions in the Middle East, after Iran launched a barrage of missiles and drones against Israel over the weekend. On Monday morning, prices for Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, fell by about 1 percent, to $89.49 a barrel. So far, there has been relief that the much-anticipated attack did little damage and had no effect on supplies. Oil prices had already increased substantially in the days before the assault, rising above the symbolic $90 a barrel level last week. Rystad Energy, a consulting firm, calculates that on fundamentals, Brent should be selling for $84 a barrel.

Gutierrez Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March in relation to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez Reed, who was responsible for firearm safety and storage on the movie’s set, is set to be sentenced Monday. Along with facing the maximum time in prison, Gutierrez Reed also faces a $5,000 fine as part of the sentence. Like Gutierrez Reed, Baldwin, who was holding the weapon, is now also facing an involuntary manslaughter charge in Hutchins’ death. The special prosecutor’s office cited summaries of some of her jailhouse calls as one of the reasons why Gutierrez Reed should be given the maximum sentence.

Other bodycam videos show at least two other officers firing toward Reed from across the street in the residential neighborhood. “Upon stopping Mr. Reed, multiple officers surrounded his vehicle while giving verbal commands. “Review of video footage and initial reports appears to confirm that Mr. Reed fired first, striking the officer and four officers returned fire,” the office said.

Why Oil Prices Have Been Rising Recently
  + stars: | 2024-04-09 | by ( Stanley Reed | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices have climbed in recent weeks, spurred by concerns over supplies and geopolitical risks, including wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, has risen more than 20 percent since mid-December. Rising oil prices could make efforts by central banks to reduce inflation more challenging. Market watchers note that a short-term retreat in prices, after such a rapid rise, is also possible. The oil price also remains below the peaks reached in 2022, when prices jumped well above $100 a barrel.

Prosecutors in New Mexico defended their handling of the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin on Friday, filing court papers in which they accused the actor of negligently failing to make sure the gun he was handed before the fatal “Rust” shooting was not loaded with live ammunition. Mr. Baldwin’s lawyers had filed a motion last month seeking to get the charge dismissed, calling the prosecution of the actor an “abuse of the system” and accusing prosecutors of having failed to give the grand jury evidence that could have helped his case. Mr. Baldwin was practicing drawing a gun he had been told was safe when it fired a live bullet in October 2021, killing the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. The armorer responsible for weapons on the set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month for loading a live round into the gun on a set where there was not supposed to be any live ammunition. In the court filing on Friday, prosecutors laid out some of their arguments for going ahead with the criminal case against Mr. Baldwin.

CNN —Special prosecutors in New Mexico claim in a new legal filing that actor Alec Baldwin’s behavior on the “Rust” movie set contributed to “safety comprises” that led to the fatal shooting of the film’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. Prosecutors sought to defend their case in a filing Friday after Baldwin’s team filed a motion in March to dismiss the indictment against the actor. “Witnesses have testified that it was this exact conduct that contributed to safety compromises on set,” the filing alleged. Gutierrez Reed – who was responsible for firearm safety and storage on the movie’s set – was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March. Prosecutors also criticized public statements made by Baldwin after the incident, accusing the actor of attempting to sway public opinion.

Rather than distill her thoughts about “this unbelievably tragic war” into the kind of public statement they seemed to want, she withdrew. “It did teach me that I didn’t really want to have that kind of sponsorship,” she concluded.
